Famous for its rugged Atlantic coastline and, most notably, the intimate harbor of Peggy’s Cove and its world-recognized lighthouse, this region of Nova Scotia presents a succession of dramatic and varied scenic vistas. Weather-carved granite, crashing surf, and ever-changing light create an ideal environment for landscape photographers seeking both classic compositions and fresh interpretations of a well-known location. We will devote significant time to exploring Peggy’s Cove and the surrounding coastal communities, carefully timing our sessions to take advantage of optimal light, tide conditions, and atmospheric effects.
In addition to the Peggy’s Cove area, the workshop will include a half-day exploration of downtown Halifax. Here, participants will have the opportunity to photograph urban cityscapes, historic architecture, working waterfronts, and candid street scenes. Halifax offers a wide range imagery possibilities in its bustling harbor, pedestrian areas, and active docks. Instruction will emphasize composition, visual storytelling, and techniques for capturing dynamic scenes in changing light.
We will also make a dedicated day trip to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, both UNESCO-recognized and widely regarded as exceptional destinations for landscape, detail, and macro photography. Colorful waterfront buildings, fishing vessels, churches, and quiet backstreets provide endless subject matter, while nearby shorelines and gardens offer opportunities to focus on smaller details and textures. Lunenburg and Halifax both present excellent settings for incorporating movement into images—whether through boats, people, or long-exposure techniques.
Throughout the workshop, we will seek out the rugged coastline, classic lighthouses, ships, docks, and piers that define Nova Scotia’s maritime character. Sunrise and sunset sessions will be a priority, allowing participants to work with low-angle light and dramatic skies. If weather and conditions permit, we will also pursue night sky and astrophotography, taking advantage of darker coastal locations. This immersive four-day workshop is designed to balance structured instruction with ample shooting time and will pass quickly. Ground transportation during the workshop will be provided.
