Meet and greet lobby of the Historic Dow Hotel at 5pm on March 19, 2026.
The workshop ends the night of March 23, 2026.
If you're like me, the first time you heard "Alabama Hills", you were wondering where in Alabama scenery existed like this. These hills are east of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains in eastern California.
You may not know the name, but you've seen the scenery here in numerous westerns and other films: "The Lone Ranger", "Gunga Din", "Django Unchained", to name a few. The main road through the area is called "Movie Road" for a reason. This rugged land is open to hiking and creating one of a kind compositions. The multitude of arches, boulders, desert plants are all backdropped with the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountains.
Nearby, we can take a sides trip up historic Owen River Vally to new views of the snow capped Sierras, and make our way to the unusual tufa towers in Mono Lake. Or the petroglyphs left by the earliest Native Americans.
With all this amazing backgrounds, we can also venture out into the hills for star trails and Milky Way night images.
We will focus on lens selection for landscapes, foregrounds and wide angle lenses, and of hopefully, nighttime astrophotography.
You may have never heard of the Alabama Hills, but after this workshop, you won't forget them.
